Great experiences, new venues, new friends

IMG_0321Being a member of Bournemouth Male Voice Choir is full of powerful experiences and lots of positive emotions.

Yesterday we met at central Bournemouth and took a coach off into the depths of Dorset to give a Concert at Tyneham Church.  It was an amazing evening – the church absolutely stuffed to capacity the choir uber-vibrant and full of good music. An historic event 70 years on (to the week) from the evacuation of Tyneham and the occasion, the poetry and music stirred up many differing feelings;  laughter, poignancy and nostalgia chief amongst them.   A privilege to take part in the event – thanks to Lt Col Ken Davies for his perfect organisation of the event – the phrase military precision comes to mind!

There being no rest for the wicked, we got in around midnight and met again at 11.15 at St. Mark’s Parish Church, Talbot Woods. for a quick rehearsal IMG_0787and then singing at the wedding of Carly and Dafydd.  The happy couple selected some Elton John, a bit of  Take That and a spot of Elvis Costello today – we are nothing if not diverse and stepping outside our comfort zone into this repertoire is good for our music making!  Such a privilege to take part in the first step on this young couples married lives.

Then on Monday the Chairman and the Musical Director will be speaking with Julian Clegg on his BBC Radio Solent programme. They will be talking about #Learn2Sing.  The MD has press-ganged twelve singers from the choir to join him in the studio for two live Christmas Carol performances too.  We are live at about 7.30 am and again at at about 8:30.

As one of the choir wives said on Friday, you get some great opportunities as a member of Bournemouth Male Voice Choir – do you or one of your friends fancy coming on board?

Concert in Tyneham Village

Concert in Tyneham Village

The members of Bournemouth Male Voice Choir will have the great privilege of giving a concert in Tyneham Church this Friday evening.

The village of Tyneham was commandeered just before Christmas 1943 by the War Office for use as firing ranges for training troops. This measure was supposed to be temporary for the duration of World War II, but in 1948 the Army placed a compulsory purchase order on the land and it has remained in use for military training ever since.

Being the 70th Anniversary of its evacuation, the choir is honoured to giving this concert (which is sold out) and will be remembering both the occupants, who gave up their homes for the war effort and the troops who trained there, went to France on D-Day and in some cases didn’t return.  Should be a moving evening and a fine concert.

westbAnother busy December weekend for BMVC … We were delighted to be asked back to Westbourne on Saturday for an open air performance to mark the switch-on of their Christmas lights. We were soon surrounded by a very enthusiastic crowd whilst the weather remained kind and the shopping trolleys weaved their way around us!

Today we performed for our friends at Kinson Community Centre for the third successive year. We were pleased to treat them to a performance of all the carols we have been rehearsing for the past few weeks, including the fabulous ‘Dorset Carol!’ Several of our members, including our very own Graham Luker (below) gave splendid solo performances and the afternoon was interspersed with festive readings.

We now enjoy a day off before a very exciting appearance at the home of Bournemouth Football Club, to take part in their community carol concert. Hope to see you all down at the Goldsands Stadium on Tuesday evening!

Show Me, Show Me!

We had great fun with the residents at Sunrise this afternoon, where the Christmas Lights were switched on by CBeebies star and local celebrity, Chris Jarvis, who is appearing locally in Aladdin.

We were given a very warm welcome and performed to a very appreciative audience for a second successive year and very much hope to join them again next year!

Fundraising Update

A fantastic start to our hectic Christmas schedule has seen us already perform twice in aid of the DEC Philippines Appeal, firstly at Castlepoint and today at Beales, in Bournemouth Town Centre.  We’re delighted to have raised £516 for the appeal as a result.

We now look forward to the build up to Christmas, starting with a return to Sunrise at Westbourne on Sunday, our annual community carol concert at Pelhams next weekend and then a highly anticipated gig at Tyneham.

It’s great to see so many people taking an interest in our music; we really appreciate it! Looking forward to seeing all of your videos and pictures of us on Facebook and Twitter!
