“Gentlemen songsters off on a spree”

20131012 rehearsal6Last evening we had the privilege of being the guests of Northampton Male Voice Choir at their launch concert for their Northampton Men Allowed group.  This project is aimed “to unleash the hidden talent of Northampton Men” by forming a choir to perform after six weeks rehearsal.  many of the men had never sung before so to see the results of their efforts was a really good experience for us.

A million thanks to the men of the Northampton choirs and their partners for the very warm welcome we received and for the phenomenal hospitality – we may need to order some larger suits, such was the sumptuous repast put before us prior to (and after) the concert.  We stayed overnight and some of the members were seen discussing the finer intricacies of choral singing with the milkman when he arrived at the hotel for his morning delivery.

The choir enjoyed the concert very much.  The acoustic of the Cripps Hall at Northampton School for Boys is drier than our usual haunts but that’s a good thing as we had to think hard about our support and other technical aspects of our singing.  The choir sang a wide ranging programme that contrasted our more serious music (from the pen of Rosephanye PowellEric Whitacre and Alan Simmons) with beautiful music from Canadian Composers/Arrangers Mark Sirett and Stephen Smith.  We also sang one of our commission arrangements from Jocelyn Lavin

We may also have let our hair down a bit…..
